EGG PUNK | POST PUNK

From the deepest recesses of Montréal (QC), a burgeoning art punk act by the moniker of Pressure Pin has materialized. April 2022 saw the release of their explosively eccentric debut EP, Superficial Feature (Under the Gun Records), under the expert supervision of producer Standard Emmanuel (Choses Sauvages, La Sécurité). The four songs contained within are as strange as they are invigorating, bursting with youthful confidence and frenetic ‘77 punk energy “that will make you dance the pogo to the rhythm of frantic egg-punk” (Maximum Rocknroll).

Originally the solo project of multi-instrumentalist Kenny Smith, also the drummer of La Sécurité, Pressure Pin has since expanded to a full-band operation, adding Daniel Howse (Bass), Adam Tiller (Guitar) and Steven Cowan (Drums) to the live lineup. The outfit has opened for the likes of King Khan & BBQ Show, Snõõper, Bodega, Cola, Stuck, and Choses Sauvages, also performing at FME and Taverne Tour. Seeking to reduce the basic components of rock ‘n’ roll to their most fundamental ingredients and rebuild from a contemporary-abstract perspective, their mission is leading the charge in the most recent deluge of musical upstarts from Eastern Canada.

Today, Pressure Pin continue to hone their craft in an attempt to deliver the most frenzied variety of new wave-tinged punk humanly possible with the release of their sophomore EP: Polyurethane (October 4th, 2024 via Mothland). RIYL: Jay Reatard, Snõõper, Uranium Club, C.C.T.V. or The Gobs.

The potent follow-up EP, Polyurethane, feels more sonically refined while also staying true to the batshit and jagged hyper-punk excerpts that we’ve grown to expect from Smith. There’s even a bit of a freak jazz saxophone solo on the track “Negative Impression.” Pressure Pin is the only artist who could scream a line like “Crushed inside a trash compactor / dying wish to turn into a cube,” like it was commonplace. In Smith’s world, nothing is normal — it’s all a buzzing fever dream of epic proportions.

A frenzied egg-punk composition enters our libraries today with the sophomore EP release from Pressure Pin- the solo project of La Sécurité’s Kenny Smith proves that his hectic sound and acidic metaphors continue to work, even now as a full-band operation.
