Visibly Choked
EXPERIMENTAL PUNK
“A hardcore Kate Bush-fronted five piece having a panic attack” would be a good descriptor to explain experimental ponk (yes, P-O-N-K) outfit Visibly Choked (Montreal, CA). This singular band of nonconformist oddbals claws, scratches, and tears into genres such as punk, no wave, and early hardcore, leaving a thick trail of jagged confetti, the remains of an ongoing metaphysical musical jubilee in support of free thinking.
Their unnerving racket of psychotic sound waves, in juxtaposition with Gabrielle’s cutthroat, yet emotive vocals and sardonically poetic lyrics, cradle unwary brains, much like a concussion would. When listeners come to, they can often feel the collective’s shared manic melancholy. Some might also experience visions of V/C smearing their proactively raw, uncomfortably groovy, and positively shocking musical prerogative on bigotry’s brand new carpet. Either/or.
Filling a room with unequivocally subversive sounds, all the while dwelling in liminal space, V/C’s live shows leave sonic bruises on impact. The quintet seamlessly melds melodic wailing, tight but tough basslines, sharp yet frantic guitar parts, and erratic percussive blazes, into a forceful and uplifting brand of heavy music that’s unshakeable. One must simply embrace that sweet, sweet anxiety as they get bent out and back into shape to the beat of a violently cohesive armada.
With their debut release set for late 2021, Visibly Choked intend to bring an aggressive but intelligent collection of songs into the world. Recorded live off the floor in a “fuck off, suck off” fashion with Steven Gibb at Lite Downs Studio, mixed by Micah Brown, and mastered by Will Killingsworth, these six titles were born out of sheer necessity, but also out of love for artistic expression. The result should please beings, who like V/C, enjoy releases from 11pm Records, strange flicks à la David Lynch, and speed (momentum, not the drug).
